Mental Health Program

Mental Health Program

The Mental Health Program was established in response to situation updates from BPHWT field areas, which identified mental health challenges linked to drug and alcohol abuse and broader social problems within local communities. Recognizing mental health as an important aspect of community well-being and a component of primary healthcare, BPHWT integrated this program within the Medical Care Program, in line with existing service capacities.

Through this integration, mental health awareness activities and basic mental health services are delivered alongside routine medical care. This approach enables health workers to identify, manage, and support individuals experiencing mental health conditions, while remaining responsive to local needs and on-the-ground realities in BPHWT target areas.

Mental Health Program Objectives

  • Assess mental health needs and conditions in BPHWT target communities
  • Strengthen health workers’ skills and knowledge in community mental health, including awareness-raising, use of mental health treatment guidelines, diagnosis and management of patients, and counseling for individuals, families, and communities
  • Provide accessible, community-based mental health support that is consistent with the BPHWT primary healthcare model and integrated within the Medical Care Program service delivery
